(Spiegel- en) Blijkpolderplas (MDMNL AtoZ Challenge 2015)

Have you read my brief introduction to this challenge?

If not, here is the link: Introducing HFNL A to Z Challenge 2015

My personal blogging theme for this year: the places I have been in the Netherlands.

At Happy Feet in the Netherlands (HFNL), I'll be writing about the places (which is not only limited to city, towns or villages but may also include restaurants, stores - places we go for hikes, where we sailed etc.) from the perspective of a runner.

The blogs here @ My Daily Mooosings in the Netherlands on the other hand will be from a perspective of an expat, mom, traveler, writer, who seeks to simplify life.

Today, "we go to" : (Spiegel -en) Blijkpolderplas.

I'm sharing an image (the one at the very top), which was originally posted for the A to Z challenge  April 2011: Thoughts of Travel! (23rd of April)

The two other images,  where you could see the silhouettes of my family, were taken on the same evening but was not shared here before.

I ran last Monday (30th of March) past this lake but I did not stop to take pictures.  I could have taken dramatic pictures of the water but I resisted because I was afraid I might stay there longer than I should (I was on a mission to run 30+ km!).

Today, I will be running by it again, this time a short run so I will take pictures, which you will see later on, tonight @ Happy Feet in the Netherlands (HFNL).

Do you like watching sunsets by the lake?  I would love to watch a sunrise by this lake with my family this year. Wish me luck?! :)

Spring & "Our" Fledgeling (2015)

“Pan, who and what art thou?" he cried huskily.

"I'm youth, I'm joy," Peter answered at a venture, "I'm a little bird that has broken out of the egg.”

2nd of February,
2015

My family & I love nature & birds!

This was a picture I took for my bike log blogseries @

The Lightness of Being on the Bike

2012

This year, I will attempt once again to blog for 365 consecutive days.

My first successful, fulfilling month-long blogging was in April 2011, in the year I began this public blog.

May, 2011

Previous to that, I blogged 5 years anonymously.  I am actually very excited to begin on the 1st of March* April (edited: 27th of March!*) , and determined to see the project until it's beautiful end on the 1st of March* April, 2016.

A 365 project has actually not been in my mind, as it usually is, as early as beginning of December of previous years but revisiting a blog - "Spring & 'Our' Fledgeling (2012)", made me nostalgic for the 365 feeling.  If you read that blog, you will understand better what I mean! :)

Writing my recent blog @Happy Feet in the Netherlands, and Running in Holland & Biking with Frodo: The Fellowship with the Seasons, here motivates me to take on this project again.

I feel like a fledgeling, ready, excited and curious for my first flight!

Speaking of fledgeling

Blue tits are nesting once again in our bird house, at the back garden of our house, almost 2 years after we moved!

February, 2015

Below are pictures my husband took 2 Sundays, ago - 15th of February.

Before I typed these words, I parted the curtain to look out of the window and check the bird house.  I saw once again the parent blue tit on the perch of the bird house!

We've been busy and have not checked if they are still there.  But they are!

I'll try to make pictures and share them as the weeks pass by, and hopefully we could have great snaps as we did 3 years ago. :)

Wishing you all a great start in the week!  Spring is just around the corner!

A Walk in the Cul De Sac

“I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.”

As I went online today to finish my second blog for this year @ The Lightness of Being on the Bike, I was amazed to find the enhanced picture (see sunrise photo, above) on my Google images of a photo I took, when I went out for a very short walk out this morning.

It is only this year, that I am using the special feature, where you can automatically upload pictures taken with your smartphone to your Google+ account.

This has helped blogging @ Happy Feet in the Netherlands so much easier.

It helped revived my love for taking pictures along the biking route, I take daily the whole year around.

In, "Once Upon A Sunny Morning in Ankeveen", I was able to share how my morning was, and retell the story of how I have overcome the challenge of adjusting to the biking lifestyle here in the Netherlands.

This was very fulfilling - telling one's story.

I came back here to tell stories.  Simple stories, I would not like to forget.

Before I wrote the first blog @ The Lightness of Being on the Bike, I saw a post of a friend on FB about the documentary over Joan Didon's - We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order To Live.  It is the same title of her book, which is  a collection of her non-fiction works.

Watching the teaser of the documentary only strengthened my resolve to keep on writing.

I would like to share our stories, the beautiful stories of my family,  and what made me strong, kept me strong and continues to keep me strong to be there not only with my physical presence but with my whole being.

When one has a bipolar disorder, simple things can be difficult but at the same time the simple things are exactly what brings back the most deep felt joy.

I am back here @ My Daily Mooosings in the Netherlands to make sure I won't forget that there are many simple things that brings joy in our life, and hopefully might bring joy in other's life too.

The simple life in the Netherlands…what is a simple life story?

For example, this simple walk in our cul de sac.

Cul de sac - I fell in love with that word, the first time I read it.  I think I was in grade school.  I can't exactly remember now.

2 years ago, when circumstances led us to living in a house in a cul de sac, I thought I would write about this.

But I never took the time to do so.

Today, I can tell you a short story involving our cul de sac.

This morning, it snowed, and when I woke up (after an upsetting night), I knew I would not be able to bike and bring the girls to school because I would not be feel confident and secure enough on the bike.

Each year, I take a fall in Winter from my bike no matter how careful I am.

This year, I am determined not to take a fall.

I asked two parents from the girls school to help me out.  They did not hesitated.  They've offered their help many times before in the past 4 years.

The girls went happily and safely to school in a warm car of a very thoughtful mom!

Instead of going straight to the house, I took pictures before I slowly walked back home.  I love the smell of the morning air.  Even the cold air that hit my face as a greeting, brought a smile to my face.

As I turned towards the path leading to home, the sunrise coming from our cul de sac sweetly beckoned me to take more pictures.  I would have normally said to myself, "Tomorrow…another sunrise..."

But not this time.  It seemed to have said to me with bright celebratory colors, "Good job for finally reaching out to others and asking for help!". I had to acknowledge it!

original non-enhanced picture of sunrise above

“How sweet the morning air is! See how that one little cloud floats like a pink feather from some gigantic flamingo. … It shines on a good many folk, but on none, I dare bet, who are on a stranger errand than you and I. How small we feel with our petty ambitions and strivings in the presence of the great elemental forces of Nature!”

Thank You!

Thank you for the kindness. A random simple gesture - a warm smile, a nod of acknowledgement, a wave of greeting, a minute of your time, a word of encouragement - means a world to someone else.

Thank you for the understanding
. "It's okay.", "It's all right." Plain words but very liberating for those you give it to.

Thank you for the acceptance. "You are not alone." "I go through the same." "I've been there as well." One never loses one strength in lending it in spirit to another.

Thank you for your generosity. It humbles me time and time again - the circle of giving does not stop with me...promise.

Thank you for giving comfort, faith, hope,
with your positivity and friendship. It's all worth it.

Sometimes life is slow, literally slow it seems for some. Most are slow because they carry a heavy burden. Or feel cloaked with heaviness for different reasons.

It's okay though.  Somehow it does eventually make for stronger character

The slow tempo of life.

When things seems slow to move forward, you are able to recognize what's most important in life. Truly.

Carrying someone over the threshold from where they can strongly believe in themselves again with kindness, understanding and acceptance makes the slow tempo of life for both very rewarding.

Spring & "Our" Fledgeling (2012)

a fledgling  on our balcony chirps, "Hello! I'm hungry!" :) taken early this morning

23rd of February, 2015 EDIT: Revisiting this blog, I decided it to change the title from "As Spring Slowly Bids Farewell" to "Spring & 'Our' Fledgeling"

It's not yet officially Summer but the last weeks of Spring makes you think that it is!

Since my last blog, posted more than a month ago, a lot has happened,  and as usual it's a challenge "to come back", and squeeze all those stories of the past weeks in one blog.  Actually, it's a challenge to decide what to blog first!

The photo I took spontaneously this morning, of the fledgling in the bird house hanging against the wall of our balcony, thankfully made it easy for me today. :)

What an inspiration!

It's gentle eyes, and wide expectant beak was such an innocent yet powerful image - it seem to me as if it's greeting:

"Goodbye, dear Spring! Hello, Summer - watch out, we will be spreading our wings, soon!

Last year in January, I blogged about liefste P and the girls purchasing a bird house, and our attempt to :
prepare our little  balcony to be a corner oasis for us , and hopefully a refuge for nature's creatures in Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall - Family Spring project 2011
Well, this year, around mid-March we joyously discovered that a pair of blue tits actually took residence in our bird house, and were already very busy, and in the middle of creating a nest.

For everyone in the family, this is a first ever experience: providing a place for birds to create their home, where they could nurture their young family.

We have been in the Netherlands, since the Spring of 2009, and I made a silent promise to myself, as we begun with establishing our residence here - or as one could say, in the spirit of our hard-working blue tit family, as we created our own "nest" in Holland - to make more effort to record the beauty of our surroundings, and the wonderful creatures we discover around us.

One of the many reasons I love 365 projects is, it gives you the extra push and motivation to capture images, you would normally not pay attention to because it's always there, it always reoccur - like  how the season slowly changes, and the small miracles within each season, like how birds lay eggs, how they hatch and the busy activity of feeding fledglings until they live their nest.

If you have been a long time reader/blog follower, it would be obvious by now, how I love the changing seasons; the magic nature (re)creates, each and every year.

Two years ago, I was finally able to complete a collage of the changing seasons, witnessed from the view in front of our living room window:

collage, blogged and shared here - clockwise:
upper left corner ~ Summer, 24th of July, 2010 - 17:21
upper right corner ~ Autumn, 30th of October, 2009
lower right corner ~ Spring, 19th of May, 2010 - 08:18
lower left corner ~ Winter, 17th of December, 2009
Several times, in different media platform, I've shared this collage, and  written what it means to me. I am sure I would be doing so again in the future, and I am quiet sure, that I will never tire of sharing it again and again because it represents (at least for me!) a positive essence of how exciting,  fascinating and magical change & renewal can be.

Showcased in this collage are the three trees just across our home. I no longer take pictures of them as religiously, as I used to but I continue to take pictures of trees in our area, as often as I can, hoping to have a complete set again to share another collage of trees through the changing seasons.

What I have not been able to do as much as I would like to, is take pictures of the different birds we see almost daily on our way to school or while biking around our area.

Sometimes, I am in too much of a hurry to stop, and can only admire the birds fleetingly.  Or  it's the other way around - I have time but the birds don't. :P

Often, the images I take are not good enough to share (read: the beauty, and the emotion I feel when I capture an image is not translated by the camera).

a sparrow, that caught Littlest eye while she sat behind me on the bike, image was first shared and blogged here

This is why I am over-joyed when the blue tit  family built their nest in the birdhouse we hang on the wall on our modest balcony.

It might seem silly to others but this experience brings so much joy to me and my family.

Yesterday, eldest daughter witnessed how one parent blue tit was feeding the hungry fledgling, and she remarked,"Awww, they are very caring creatures!"

As we always do, we shared our mommy & daughter  "awww moment" with our"awww faces" to each other, shared a big silly wide smile, quick happy  peck & hugs.

The blue tit family, afforded me and my own family the chance to pause, and witness a simple beauty of what life & nature is truly about. A strong, vibrant reminder, yet again, of what is most important.

I wish the quality of the images would be better, but somehow the images we did take and shared here, translate "enough" how we feel about the privilege of being a part of something that is older than all of us, what should actually be "private, but oh so beautiful to witness:

Life, how it is created and nurtured.  Life could be - if we allow it - so basic, so simple and oh, so wonderful.
We love, we nurture, and we repeat the process, every year, throughout the seasons. - lesson learned this Spring, from our blue tits fledgling & their parents.

As Summer approaches, I aim to focus even more on the beauty of what is just right in front of me, and  nurture my connections deeper, with those I hold most dear: my family, my friends, & those who share the dream of being a positive change in the world.

What have you learned this Spring? And what do you look forward this Summer?

34th Birthday Pictures Resurfaced!

image was taken by my old  Nokia mobile

Hurra!!!

While sorting through 5 years worth of images, I stumbled upon what I thought were lost forever - pictures from my 34th birthday!

I am very sentimental, and this set of pictures is not only important to me because it was my birthday but it was the last "grand celebration" (in my humble grand way!) I had in Germany.  I did not wait for my 35th birthday to celebrate it in a big fashion but wanted to use the 34th birthday as an occasionto give thanks to all the girlfriends, lovely ladies, who have helped me through a difficult period.

Now, in hindsight, I am very grateful I did organize that birthday celebration (although I spent my wages from a new job, I started only a month before!)  because it was the last time I gathered them before we moved here in the Netherlands.

I am hoping for my 40th, I could do something special and gather girlfriends again! I wonder if with enough preparation, and "begging" I could make them come to the Netherlands for it?! Or maybe, I could celebrate it in Germany because I never did have a formal goodbye party.

What do you think is better?

Life is Sweet

Eldest treated me today to a FULL BLAST of "sweetness".

I've been having terrible back-pains the last days, and have been taking it easy. The girls tried hard to do some chores that are not too heavy but also very important and needs to be done, so that it does not pile up when I am finally alot better to resume my daily duties.

Wednesday is always a half-day at school; as the older girls got home, and have eaten lunch, they took out Littlest for a walk to give me some quiet time.

As they came back Middle daughter took nap while Eldest further took care of the kitchen. I smelled something delicious, and that is when she told me she baked brownies for all of us!

As you can see from the upper right corner of the collage, Littlest took the first bite and loved it! It's not for nothing that we call her ChocolaBaby(this is actually a substitute nickname because the actual one will reveal Littlest name)!

Thanks, darling Eldest child, for the wonderfully prepared tea-time snack and for always being the sweetest and most thoughtful daughter and sister.

Sleeping Blogger

Welcome, friends, readers, ICLWers! It's been at almost three weeks since my last post here due to a lot of personal matters.

Last night, I was debating with myself whether to post all the drafts meant for the daily blogging (3 weeks worth) to attempt to catch up or go simply on a Summer blog break, and decide what to do later on about all those drafted posts.  I still have not completely made up my mind yet but I am leaning towards a 3-month blogging break so far.

I was thinking if there was a way to delete my name on the list of ICLW the past couple of weeks but I was experiencing a fatigue that everything was such an effort, that I procrastinated about dealing with anything regarding blogging until the ICLW week finally arrived!

The comment on my last posted blog re-awakened this slumbering blogger, in all sense of the word!

I'll see what the ICLW week will bring, and take it one day at a time, just like the idea of this page...

Barefoot in Naarden (Vesting)

As part of 30 Day Bike Challenge in my other blog The Lightness of Being on the Bike, the family cycled together to Naarden Vesting today.

Littlest needed a lot of convincing to say goodbye to the playground we discovered right across De Grote Kerk (Dutch for big church) in Naarden Vesting.

The Summer Feeling

Yay! June is here! With it came the sunshine back in Holland!

Today,  my personal challenge of riding the bike for 30 consecutive days commenced.  I will be documenting this experience in The Lightness of Being on the Bike; it is a project to jump start the blog, which I created last April.

I will be blogging on that page daily this month while developing the idea : 30 Days of Bike Challenge, afterwards I would be setting selected days of blogging all about biking, by July.

This project would not have come to life, had I not blogged consistently for the last 5 months.  I am very grateful for the blog events I have participated in April  & May (A to Z Challenge and WordCount Blogathon) and the monthly one week long ICLW.  They, all in their own way, gave me the courage, inspiration, and most of all they brought back the magical delight in blogging!

What plans do you have for June? for Summer?

Birthday, Blogathon & Being Beautifully 40

What a beautiful Sunday filled with simple pleasures!

Today, Omi B, the girl's adopted grandmother here in the Netherlands, and my soul mom celebrated her birthday.  It was also a family get together since the Yuletide season, not everyone was present, still it was very heartwarming to see everyone who was there.  Specially, L, P's daughter, who called this week to say she would like to come for the celebration.  This needs special mention because teen-ager's usually drift away from such gathering because of their own busy social schedule, and we understand it perfectly.  So it was very endearing to know she made specific plans to join us and call ahead about it.

While P drove the girls to Omi B (we would not have all fitted in the car), on the way he picked up our present for her: digital picture frame (Tomorrow, I will edit here tomorrow, what it is exactly, how Omi and the family reacted, our own impression etc. because I am too sleepy to write about it details now!).  Then he came back for me, and stored in our memory card the pictures we put together for the digital picture frame.

I used the time that P was on the go to finish the first post in a blog I created yesterday, entitled Being Beautifully 40.

Initially, the idea is to record thoughts in a 9 month period before the big 4-0 milestone. Plans developed to expand this idea to include: writing articles based on improving life stylishly and affordably; it will also be about healthy living through simplifying life and balancing priorities. In short living life to the fullest! Life does not simply begin at 40, you savour it more intensely.
Also, as I mentioned in a previous post, there is another blog born from this mother blog, entitled The Lightness of Being on the Bike.  I thought it is only appropriate to give this particular passion it's own home.

There were many things that I learned this month, which gave me confidence to put into action the ideas of creating those two mentioned blogs.  Most of it was through reading Michelle V. Rafter, who is the blogger behind WordCount, and spearheads the WordCount Blogathon I participated for the first time this year.
As I put my feet up with my Sunday's best shoes, I bask at the warm feeling of experiencing the rewards of living life simply, one day at a time, and the simple pleasure of being able to record them in words, which used to elude me.

Sending my love to all faithful readers, followers, generous commentors from ICLW, and WC Blogathoners!
